Simplified Automation Fuels Enterprise Manufacturing Upgrades

As the company’s production capacity requirements continue to rise, the strategy of “reducing headcount while optimizing talent utilization” will be our primary approach to lowering labor costs. Automation is an effective solution for reducing labor costs, alleviating work intensity, easing staffing pressures, improving production efficiency, ensuring consistent product quality, and enhancing core manufacturing competitiveness.
Implementing automation to achieve “replacing humans with machines” is a large-scale, systematic undertaking that touches on every aspect of production—layout optimization, equipment upgrades, automated inspection, and more—and requires substantial capital investment. Fully realizing automation and intelligent manufacturing aligns with our company’s development needs. Nevertheless, we have chosen to start with simple automation: over the past few years, we have formulated solutions tailored to our specific needs, making targeted modifications and improvements without incurring excessive costs for new equipment or installations. We call this approach “streamlined automation.” Here, “streamlined” does not mean simplistic; rather, it refers to a concise, well-organized design that delivers straightforward, user-friendly automation for operators. For example: (1) We integrated previously isolated production processes into a continuous flow line by connecting all stages—from raw blanks to finished products—via conveyor systems, enabling better control of work-in-progress, shortening cycle times, reducing material handling, and automating material flow throughout the production process; (2) We retrofitted existing manual grinding machines with CNC systems and automatic gauging devices, thereby automating the machining process and achieving the goal of “requiring one fewer operator—or one fewer task”; (3) We replaced traditional analog readouts with digital displays and then further simplified measurement by using color changes in gauges to indicate pass/fail, thus enabling “foolproof” control of the measurement process; (4) We shifted from sequentially inspecting multiple parameters one by one to simultaneous multi-parameter testing, leveraging comprehensive gauges to minimize time wasted during inspection; and (5) We deployed a wide range of mechanical, electric, and pneumatic equipment to make operations more convenient for employees, reduce physical strain, and ensure that every worker can perform their duties comfortably until retirement. Streamlined automation is applicable everywhere and in every situation; as long as it fits our needs, it is the best solution—and this approach has been a powerful cornerstone of our steadily improving efficiency over the past few years.
The use of simplified automation has only been a stopgap measure in the recent period; ultimately, we will move toward true automation and intelligent systems. Over the past two years, we have successively deployed gantry robots and six-axis heavy-duty industrial robots, gaining valuable experience for future automation initiatives. This year, we plan to achieve full automation on a four-cylinder engine production line.
Although the drive toward intelligent manufacturing in China still has a long way to go, there is no doubt that, as the global economy continues to develop and grow at a rapid pace, smart manufacturing facilities will bring transformative change and profound impact to all industries, while also spearheading the evolution and innovation of global manufacturing models. For China’s manufacturing sector, embracing this transformation has become an inevitable choice.
