Experts from Cummins’ Three Major R&D Centers Gather at ASIMCO Camshaft

From August 15 to August 28, 2017, a delegation of 20 people from Cummins’ three major R&D centers—North America’s CTC R&D Center, the UK’s Darlingtun R&D Center, and Wuhan’s East Asia R&D Center—visited ASIMCO Camshaft.

This time, the North American R&D Center dispatched several experts with over thirty years of experience, including materials expert Larry, machining expert Jeff, quality expert Justin, senior engine designer Pablo, ABO senior quality manager Daniel, as well as David, Shawn, and Henry, to jointly discuss with ASIMCO Camshaft the technical challenges in the M project that exceed Cummins’ current standards. In order to produce the best Camshaft, upholding the spirit of craftsmanship and pursuing perfection, we engaged in clear and concise discussions with Cummins experts, conducting group discussions on each issue, formulating test plans, developing test schedules, and evaluating test results. After two consecutive weeks of highly efficient work, characterized by open discussions, brainstorming, risk analysis, and rapid response to test plans, the Camshaft for the M project ultimately achieved a leap-forward improvement. Our goal is to resolve all issues before the project is launched into the market, thereby achieving the best possible market performance.

The main purpose of Ian, a senior designer at the Darlintun Engine Design Center in the UK, on this visit is to upgrade the product drawings of the QSF3.8 Camshaft. As engine performance continues to improve, the surface quality requirements for the Camshaft have also become almost stringent. During this visit, Ian discussed the feasibility of drawing upgrades with the Camshaft team and the North American R&D Center team.

Sun Bing, Design Director at the East Asia R&D Center and materials expert Sean, are visiting primarily to discuss the new ISZ project. The first batch of prototype parts for Project Z has already been delivered and successfully ignited.

Additional news: On September 8, 2017, Mr. Robert Samuel, Global Director of Supplier Quality at Cummins, Mr. Hao Yong and Mr. Wu Keqin from ABO Shanghai visited ASIMCO Camshaft. The purpose of this visit was to learn about the latest progress of the M project, which is a collaboration between ASIMCO Camshaft and Cummins USA.

Project M is a 13L engine project directly supplied to the North American market, with the Camshaft provided by ASIMCO. It is currently in the Beta sample stage and is scheduled for PPAP by the end of 2017. The Cummins CTC expert team and the ASIMCO Camshaft team have maintained seamless cooperation throughout the process, from product plan formulation and manufacturing design to sample delivery and test result sharing. The ultimate goal of both parties is to provide zero-defect Camshaft products for the North American market.

The ASIMCO Camshaft management warmly welcomed Mr. Robert Samuel. Mr. Robert Samuel expressed his appreciation for the ASIMCO team’s consistent positive and open communication in its collaboration with Cummins, as well as its long-term provision of high-quality products to Cummins.

Mr. Robert Samuel listened to the report on Project M and visited the workshop. He provided detailed guidance on the project’s continuous improvement efforts and put forward specific requirements for on-site product quality control methods. He urged SQIE and ASIMCO to work together to ensure the steady and efficient implementation of the project. The ASIMCO team expressed their heartfelt gratitude for Mr. Robert Samuel’s support and guidance, and wished Project M every success.

In the cooperation with the Cummins team, Cummins highly appreciated ASIMCO’s efficient and open approach to Camshaft work. The Cummins team’s spirit of research, willingness to break through and challenge limits, and attitude of utilizing all possible resources to achieve project perfection are worthy of our learning and reference!
