Automation equipment and automated production lines are fundamental indicators of a company’s level of modernization and represent the indispensable path for building new core competencies. This year, our company will introduce a large number of advanced production devices, gantry robots, and standalone robotic arms to support the automation upgrade and transformation of our production lines, thereby providing robust assurance for the company’s leapfrog development.
Building on the successful retrofit of the C9 front-end truss robot in 2014, we began planning for front-end automation of the production line in 2016, and the VIKING line’s front-end automation was successfully commissioned in 2017. In the year preceding the installation of the truss robotic system, the company had already assigned personnel to continuously carry out foundational tasks such as preliminary data collection and model configuration. The truss-based automated handling system has significantly boosted production efficiency: the cycle time from end-face milling to finish turning has been reduced to just 350 seconds, overall line efficiency has improved by more than 30%, and two operator positions have been eliminated.
Automation equipment replacing human labor not only effectively boosts labor productivity but also significantly reduces workers’ physical exertion, enabling them to devote more energy to quality control at each process step. In the past, workers had to handle and load/unload products weighing several tons—sometimes even over ten tons—every day, which was both physically demanding and prone to fatigue-induced lapses in quality control, thereby increasing the risk of product scrap. Compared with traditional production methods, ASIMCO Camshaft Company has been rapidly adopting new technologies, continuously summarizing and replicating its automation successes. In 2019, an automated truss robot for the front-end processes of the 6D dual-line was successfully installed and has been operating stably for more than six months, delivering excellent results. At the beginning of 2020, a truss robot for automatically handling sandboxes at the shakeout station in the foundry was successfully installed and has been running in a trial phase for over a month, yielding positive outcomes: it has reduced staffing by two positions, allowed for localized enclosure of the shakeout area, substantially lowered noise levels and dust emissions, and improved the workshop’s working environment. These two successful automation upgrades have accumulated substantial experience for the company’s further automation efforts. This year, additional projects are slated for installation, including an automated truss robot for the front-end processes of the H1 production line, as well as planned initiatives such as an automated loading/unloading robot for the quenching unit, a grit-flow loading/unloading robot, an automated rough-turning unit for the steel shaft’s front-end processes, an automated through-type cleaning machine for the cleaning room, an automated inspection robot, and an automated loading/unloading system for heavier steel shaft operations. All these projects fully demonstrate ASIMCO Camshaft’s unwavering commitment to advancing automation.
“As the saying goes, ‘To do a good job, one must first sharpen one’s tools.’” The introduction of new automated equipment has significantly boosted production capacity, reduced employee workload, enhanced productivity, and ensured consistent product quality—thanks in part to automated inspection systems integrated into the production lines—thereby delivering both tangible economic benefits and intangible social benefits to the company.
