With a systematic product portfolio as the entry point, where does Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s all-scenario capability truly shine?

“The international market remains robust, and sales of gas-powered heavy-duty trucks have surged.” As 2023 draws to a close, a review of the commercial vehicle market’s performance over the past year will likely lead everyone to this conclusion. For Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle, 2023 was a year of deepening the brand-upward strategy centered on the customer, with a steadfast focus on enhancing customer value and consistently delivering on every promise rooted in reliability.

As a leader in the industry, how can Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle rise to the challenge of an increasingly competitive commercial-vehicle market by enhancing product competitiveness and meeting the expectations of stakeholders—including the market, investors, and end-users? At the 2024 Partner Conference held at the Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Technical Center in Wuhan, the “City of Rivers,” a comprehensive showcase featuring 47 model-year vehicles across eight major segments—tractor units, cargo trucks, construction vehicles, and specialized applications—unveiled Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s product strategy to the outside world.

Dual-fuel (diesel and gas) system architecture: delivering differentiated solutions

Due to differences in resource endowments across regions, there are often significant regional variations in the choice between diesel and natural-gas-powered heavy-duty trucks across China’s vast territory. In particular, since the beginning of this year, the widening price gap between oil and gas has driven a rapid increase in the market share of natural-gas vehicles, making them a key driver of growth in the domestic medium- and heavy-duty truck market.

How is Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle responding? Judging from the 47 model-year vehicles on display at the event, internal-combustion-engine vehicles remain the primary focus of future development. However, whether in the tractor-trailer lineup or the cargo-truck lineup, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle has unveiled multiple models powered by natural gas, demonstrating a proactive response to market demand and a well-considered product strategy that supports dual-track development—fuel and gas.

From a vehicle-type perspective, the display vehicles at the show comprise 24 models across the tractor and cargo-truck series, accounting for more than half of the total; in addition, there are 6 specialized vehicles, 5 construction vehicles, 6 new-energy vehicles, 4 models tailored for overseas markets, as well as one intelligent unmanned mining truck and one intelligent heavy-duty truck. It is thus evident that Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle has not only capitalized on the burgeoning market for gas-powered vehicles but has also proactively positioned itself to meet the demands of international markets and to embrace the future of new-energy development, offering comprehensive transportation solutions for all operational scenarios.

Of course, a diverse product portfolio is merely the foundation for Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle to meet the needs of various niche applications and establish market differentiation; to help customers boost their operational profitability, we must also deliver reliable solutions that effectively address their pain points.

Building a leader in efficient logistics through technology-driven, all-scenario capabilities.

Just as mainland residents crave fresh seafood while coastal dwellers covet the sweet fruits of the interior, these goods often travel thousands of kilometers and must be delivered within strict timeframes to preserve their quality. Consequently, “efficiency” has become the central priority in interregional logistics—and naturally, vehicle selection must align with this goal.

At the Partner Conference, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle showcased seven flagship tractor units, underscoring its deep expertise in developing high-efficiency, reliable long-haul logistics tractors. Ranging from the Tianlong KX with a maximum output of 680 PS to the Tianlong KX and GX models spanning power ratings of 630 PS, 600 PS, 560 PS, and 520 PS, as well as two high-horsepower natural-gas-powered variants at 530 PS and 580 PS, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle has not only assembled a comprehensive product portfolio tailored to customers who prioritize timeliness and reliability, but also leveraged world-class components—such as Cummins’ Z15 engine and ZF/Woerde AMT transmissions—to set the benchmark for efficient long-haul logistics, making these vehicles an indispensable tool for helping customers achieve reliable cost reductions.

It is worth noting that these flagship tractor units are built on diverse platforms, including the Flagship King, Flagship Rongyao, G200, and D760, which underscores Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s robust capability to expand across multiple product platforms. Even when market demand shifts, the company can leverage its extensive platform portfolio to rapidly iterate and launch high-end flagship tractors that precisely meet customer needs, thereby maintaining strong adaptability in the marketplace.

In addition to the flagship tractor, the event also showcased eight tractor models tailored to meet the needs of various niche market segments, spanning a power range of 460 to 520 horsepower. This further expands Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s capability to handle all scenarios in cross-regional transportation, ensuring that whether the task involves general cargo, hazardous materials, or bulk and mixed-load transport, there is always a suitable model available in its extensive product portfolio.

Although tractor units account for a substantial share of medium- and heavy-duty truck sales, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s line of cargo trucks is equally pivotal to its industry leadership and robust market competitiveness. Among the nine models on display, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle showcases its commanding dominance in the cargo-truck segment through innovations such as air suspension, lightweight design, highly efficient engine control, high-efficiency transmissions, and a cutting-edge, tech-inspired intelligent cab.

For instance, in the express and fast-delivery segment, Dongfeng Tianjin 560 is available, with a curb weight as low as 4.6 tonnes; for medium- to long-haul operations, the Tianjin KR offers fuel consumption as low as 18 kg per 100 km; and for high-value-added applications such as green-channel logistics and cold-chain transport, the Tianlong KL delivers a maximum torque of 2,300 N·m for smoother, more refined driving. Across a wide array of freight scenarios, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle has built up solid product capabilities through years of technological expertise in various fields—and looking ahead to the future development of the industry, it appears poised to go even further.

Promoting the Continued Implementation of the “Dual Carbon” Goals and Advancing Multiple Technological Pathways in Parallel

As the “dual carbon” strategy continues to gain momentum in the commercial vehicle sector, an increasing number of medium- and heavy-duty truck applications are now seeing a diverse array of new-energy models powered by different technological pathways. In certain niche segments, pure-electric vehicles—representing the operational fleet—have already demonstrated substantial operational advantages over their diesel counterparts, prompting more and more operators to consider transitioning to new-energy solutions. This trend, in turn, provides strong support for Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s strategic positioning in the new-energy segment.

Based on the on-site conditions, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle showcased a total of six new-energy models: the Dongfeng Tianjin 18-ton all-electric wash-and-sweep vehicle, the Dongfeng Tianlong KL hybrid tractor, the Dongfeng Tianlong KL battery-swap tractor, the Dongfeng Tianlong hydrogen-fuel tractor, the Dongfeng Tianlong new-energy muck truck, and the Dongfeng Tianlong KC all-electric cement mixer.

In terms of cargo types, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s new-energy models can meet the demand for transporting resource commodities such as sand and gravel, steel, and coal, as well as specialized applications like cement mixing and urban sanitation. In terms of technological approaches, these six models cover a range of options, including pure electric (including battery-swap), hybrid, and hydrogen-fuel technologies. This underscores Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s commitment to a parallel-development strategy across multiple technology pathways in the new-energy sector—providing users with viable solutions for high-efficiency, long-range, zero-emission operations while also broadening the pathways for the commercial-vehicle industry to achieve the “dual-carbon” goals.

Conclusion

From traction and freight applications to expansion into overseas markets and the growing trend toward new energy, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle has showcased its cutting-edge technological capabilities—driven by a deep understanding of customer needs and a commitment to delivering robust, high-performance products—through 47 model-year variants, thereby establishing end-to-end, all-scenario solutions that address the diverse demands of various market segments.

In today’s rapidly evolving international landscape, driven by the explosive growth of new energy and intelligent connected vehicle technologies, the key to staying ahead of the curve and securing a commanding position in the next era of market competition lies in leveraging Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle’s robust product portfolio—as vividly demonstrated by the 47 model-year vehicles on display.
